About Chemical Peels in San Francisco, San Jose and San Mateo

Chemical peels are facial rejuvenation solutions that improve the appearance and texture of facial skin by gently removing its outer, damaged layers. Facial cosmetic peels are particularly helpful for individuals with sun damaged, pigmented and/or wrinkled skin. Today, there are a number of different types of chemical peels, which vary in ingredients, strength, as well as the depth of peeling. The most frequently performed peels are either alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) based. The TCA based peels are much stronger and more appropriate for patients with moderate skin problems.

Who is a candidate for a chemical peel in San Mateo / San Jose?

Chemical peels are generally performed for cosmetic purposes and can improve fine lines, skin discoloration, age and sun spots, freckles, minimal scarring and can also be used to treat arms, legs, neck and hands. Chemical peels can be classified as light or superficial, as well as medium and deep. Depending on each patient’s unique skin care needs, Dr. Beck will use a peel that is most appropriate for your current skin condition and will produce the best possible aesthetic results. To find out which chemical peel is best for you, contact Dr. Joel Beck, top San Francisco / San Jose plastic surgeon. Patients who are allergic to certain chemicals may not be eligible for a chemical peel, but can choose from a number of other options, including laser skin resurfacing.

How is chemical peel procedure performed?

During the procedure, Dr. Beck first determines which type of chemical peel is best for you and mixes the solution. Next, he applies the chemical peel using a sterile sponge or cotton pad. Depending on the strength of the peel, some San Mateo / San Francisco chemical peel patients may require local anesthesia to avoid any discomfort. The chemical peel procedure takes less than 30 minutes. Dr. Beck offers a number of chemical peels, including the Vi peel, Obagi Blue peel, Glycolic peel, as well as Pumpkin peel.

Vi peel is one of the latest chemical solutions available today. It treats sun damaged skin and reduces the effects of aging. It differs from other peels in that it contains concentrated vitamin and minerals that help detoxify the skin. Vi peel helps shrink enlarged pores and stimulates collagen production.

Obagi Blue peel is a blue solution that is mixed with TCA. It corrects wrinkles, scars, facial laxity and pigmentation problems. The Obagi blue peel can also be combined with a Fractional CO2 laser therapy for the best possible, long-lasting results.

Glycolic peel contains glycolic acid that, once applied, seeps under the damaged skin and removes the tissue that is holding the dead skin to the surface. The dead skin is chemically removed, which leads to a much smoother skin surface. In addition, glycolic peel moisturizes the new skin.

Pumpkin peel is AHA based and gently strips the skin of unwanted cells. It is one of the most popular chemical peels among San Francisco chemical peels patients. The pumpkin naturally rejuvenates the skin and releases a number of beneficial nutrients, including antioxidants and vitamin C.

Most of our San Mateo / San Jose chemical peel patients experience mild discomfort, redness and/or irritation during the peeling process of seven to ten days. Sunscreen is strongly recommended for outdoor activities. Patients who experience a severe skin reaction should contact Dr. Beck immediately.
