Characteristics of a Feminine Chin

Like the nose, there isn't necessarily one chin that is the perfect feminine chin. Oftentimes, the men and women society finds most attractive have features that are unconventional or different from most other people. For this reason, an appealing female chin may have certain characteristics we associate with masculinity, such as a square shape.

Depending on your unique feminization goals and Dr. Beck's recommendations, chin surgery may be used to:

  • Reduce the projection of your chin
  • Make your chin more pointy and less square
  • Make your chin more square
  • Lengthen the vertical dimension of your chin

Typically, a male-to-female transgender patient will reduce her chin. Masculine chins often project outward, giving the chin a long appearance. A more feminine chin projects less and is generally smaller. Although society typically associates a pointy chin with femininity, this aesthetic result may or may not be right for you. Many attractive women have a square rather than pointy chin. You and Dr. Beck will discuss the look that may be right for your goals, your facial features and your overall appearance.

A recessive or underdeveloped chin tends to look less appealing on both men and women. If your chin is recessed, which means it does not project forward past your lower lip, you may choose to augment your chin.

Improving your Chin with Facial Feminization Chin Surgery

Some of the most common forms of facial feminization chin surgery are:

Chin reshaping:

If the bone and soft tissue of the chin makes the chin protrude very far forward, or makes the chin especially angular and square, then bone and tissue reshaping may be an effective way to create a more feminine chin shape.

Chin implants

If the chin is recessed or could benefit from augmentation, then a chin implant can be attached to the bone for a permanent result.

Fillers and injectables may also be used, although the chin contouring results are only temporary and will fade in several months.

This is an example of a very square, prominent and vertically tall chin. It is a good example of very masculine chin, but one that is overstated. Chin implants can be used to create this appearance if desired. In a male to female transgender patient, this type of chin should be softened by reshaping the bone to diminish squareness and height.

This photo of the same chin has been computer-altered to show more typical dimensions. Which of these two chins works better for a male is a matter of personal preference, but there is no question that the smaller, rounder chin is the only alternative for a female.

The chin in the middle photo is square, but its statistically less common contour does not in any way detract from this beautiful woman's appearance.

This chin is clearly “too tall” to be ideal. It serves as a reminder, however, that not all features have to conform to gender ideals for a face to be considered attractive. Male to female transgender patients with a similar chin would be advised to consider diminishing its height.

Getting started

Dr. Beck wants to help you achieve the result that is right for you. At our practice, we never base our surgical recommendations on what is considered a perfect female characteristic. Instead, we take the time to get to know you and your goals, and to tailor facial feminization to your unique facial features. The end result is a beautiful, feminine chin in harmony with your overall appearance.

During your initial consultation with Dr. Beck, he will examine your face, go over prior cosmetic and medical procedures, answer your questions, review before and after photographs with you, and furnish you with results from our advanced 3D imaging software. By the end of this first visit, you should be much better informed about the possibilities as well as the risks of chin reduction surgery. Dr. Beck will then create a detailed road map for your surgery, at which point you will be ready to book a date.

The consultation is a great time to discuss other facial feminization procedures as well, such as rhinoplasty, cheek surgery, Adam’s apple reduction, jaw reduction and many more. Clients often prefer to undergo several treatments at once simply because it can amend costs, shorten downtime and minimize the number of incisions required along with associated pain and discomfort.
